It may be possible to access funding from sources
other than European programmes. The National Lottery and some public
sector agencies in Wales deliver a variety of grant schemes, some
of which are part-financed by the Objective 1 programme (please
refer to the page on Regional Objective 1 projects). Below is a
list and contact details of some of the major schemes on offer:
1. National Lottery Grant Schemes
The National Lottery was established by Parliament in 1993 to fund
UK projects which would not normally receive UK government funding.
There are five good causes they are the arts, sports, charities,
education and the environment, and heritage..
The Arts Council for Wales:
distributes money raised through the National Lottery to arts projects
in Wales. Currently it gives grants to projects to construct or
refurbish buildings; to buy equipment such as musical instruments;
and encourage people to enjoy, take part in or get training in the
arts. It also gives grants that will encourage the growth of a national

The Sports Council for Wales: distributes
money raised through the National Lottery via its SPORTLOT fund.
SPORTLOT funding is divided into three categories: capital projects
(for buildings etc); revenue funding (for staffing etc) and community

The Community Fund: gives
Lottery money to charities, voluntary and community organisations
to help those at disadvantage in society and to improve the quality
of life in the community. The Community Fund wants to fund projects
that will bring about long-term changes to the lives of those in

The New Opportunities Fund:
awards grants to good causes in education, health and the environment,

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF):
enables communities to celebrate, look after and learn more about
Wales' diverse heritage. This includes developments such as historic

Welsh Development Agency (WDA)
has a range of finance programmes designed to assist and encourage
